About Halikonlahti Nature Reserve

Halikonlahti Nature Reserve is situated on the southwestern coast of Finland, near the town of Salo. This protected coastal wetland encompasses a mix of shallow bays, reed beds, meadows, and shoreline forests, covering approximately 30 square kilometers. The reserve's diverse habitats make it a crucial stopover and nesting area for over 270 species of birds, including numerous migratory and rare birds, such as the black-necked grebe and the barnacle goose. Geography-wise, Halikonlahti features sheltered shallow waters connected to the Baltic Sea, supporting various aquatic plants and fish, which attract waterfowl and wading birds along with mammals like beavers and otters. Historically, the area has been used for traditional fishing and reed harvesting, practices that continue in a controlled manner to sustain the ecosystem. Visitor appeal centers on accessible wooden boardwalks and birdwatching towers that allow for quiet observation without disturbing wildlife. The reserve is also popular with photographers and nature enthusiasts, especially in spring and autumn migration seasons, when bird activity peaks. Educational signage provides insights into local flora, fauna, and conservation efforts, enhancing the visitor experience. Low impact recreation such as walking and wildlife photography is encouraged, while motorized access and large group activities are limited to preserve the habitat. Overall, Halikonlahti Nature Reserve offers a peaceful retreat into Finland’s coastal biodiversity, supporting both wildlife conservation and public outdoor enjoyment.
